Australian educators will have a rare opportunity in July 2026 to learn directly from one of the world’s leading voices in inclusive education, as internationally recognised education expert Dr Katie Novak delivers an exclusive one-day Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Masterclass in Brisbane.
Presented by Illume Learning, this advanced professional learning event marks the first time Dr Novak has delivered this particular masterclass in Australia and will be the only opportunity for educators nationwide to attend the workshop in person.
Taking place on 23 July 2026 in Brisbane, the masterclass is designed for experienced educators, curriculum leaders, heads of inclusion, deputy principals, and school leaders who are ready to move beyond the foundations of Universal Design for Learning and explore its next evolution in practice.
Widely regarded as one of the world’s foremost authorities on UDL, Dr Novak has worked with schools, education systems, and governments across the globe to help transform teaching and learning through inclusive, evidence-informed approaches. Her work has influenced thousands of educators internationally and continues to shape contemporary thinking around learner agency, accessibility, and educational equity.

Unlike introductory UDL workshops, Illume Learning said this advanced masterclass focuses on how schools can design learning environments that empower students to take greater ownership of their learning while strengthening belonging, independence, and engagement.
Participants will explore how Universal Design for Learning and social-emotional learning can work together to create more inclusive learning environments where all students feel valued, capable, and supported to succeed.
The day will provide practical strategies for:
- Designing UDL-aligned units that maintain rigorous learning goals while providing flexible pathways to success
- Embedding belonging and social-emotional learning into instructional design
- Leveraging blended learning approaches to increase access, flexibility, and learner independence
- Shifting from teacher-directed instruction toward student-led learning, reflection, and goal setting
Illume Learning Director Ms Amanda Corby said the event represents a unique professional learning opportunity for Australian schools seeking to strengthen inclusive practice and improve outcomes for diverse learners.
“Dr Katie Novak is one of the most influential voices in inclusive education globally,” she said.
“This masterclass offers content that goes well beyond introductory UDL training. School curriculum leaders and heads of inclusion will leave with practical frameworks and strategies they can immediately apply to strengthen learner agency, belonging, and engagement across their schools.”
Ms Corby said the workshop is expected to attract educators from across Australia due to its exclusive nature and limited availability.
For those who are new to UDL, attendees can also access an optional introductory webinar presented by Ms Corby prior to the event. The session provides a practical overview of the UDL framework and key concepts to help participants maximise their learning during the masterclass.
