West End State School in Queensland has unveiled a new outdoor play and learning space as part of major campus improvement works involving Australian playground designer and manufacturer Willplay.
The inner-city primary school in the heart of Brisbane has experienced significant enrolment growth amid high-density development in its catchment area, prompting the Queensland Government to support additional teaching space and enhanced outdoor environments.
“The idea behind the play space upgrades was to reclaim and revitalise lesser-used areas of the school grounds, promote active, imaginative play, integrate nature into the student experience, and enhance the outdoor amenity despite the constraints of an inner-city site,” Willplay said.
“The expansion scheme emphasises a ‘green-space campus heart’ connecting new classrooms and outdoor areas.”

Willplay was tasked with developing a play area offering a diverse range of difficulty in the elements, while still being an inclusive space with the use of synthetic flooring and ground-based activities.
The company’s custom Bespoke Tower is the key element driving the adventure. Partnered with a modified Boxie Climber, the play and functionality is designed for use by lower to mid primary age children.
“Our use of timber look aluminium and fully recyclable materials give the look and feel of timber, without the expensive maintenance and upkeep. Splashes of colour invite users to enjoy the area, while maintain a natural aesthetic and no compromised design,” Willplay said.
“The location was chosen to utlilise the significant natural shade in the area which was previously an under-used turfed space. This eliminated the need for an additional shade structure and allowed extra play value in the area.”
According to Willplay, the equipment selection was based around its use of high-end materials, including aluminium and stainless steel. It’s hoped the play areas will become a legacy for the school, offering many years of low maintenance play and happy childhood memories.
“Now an integral part of the school day, this is a well utilised addition to the school infrastructure and a big hit with students and teachers alike,” the company said.
