The Victorian Department of Education has released its Expulsions Data Snapshot 2024, revealing that 236 students were expelled from government schools.
The report shows:
- 23 primary school students and 213 secondary students were expelled between January 1 and December 31, 2024.
- Secondary schools accounted for the vast majority of expulsions, with Year 8 and Year 9 students most represented.
- Male students were expelled at a significantly higher rate than female students.
Expulsions remain a last-resort disciplinary measure, used only after all other interventions have been exhausted.
The department emphasises that expulsions are considered when a student’s behaviour poses a serious risk to the safety of others or significantly disrupts learning.
The report highlights that schools must develop a transition plan for expelled students, ensuring they continue education through:
- Enrolment in another school
- Participation in alternative education programs
- Support services tailored to individual needs
While the total number of expulsions remains relatively stable compared to recent years, the department continues to monitor trends and reinforce early intervention strategies aimed at reducing expulsions.
The full report, including detailed data tables and methodology, is available on the department’s website.
