Establishing an Esports lab offers students a platform to engage with technology in a stimulating, competitive environment.

In the evolving landscape of education and extracurricular activities, the advent of Esports represents a seismic shift, marrying the competitive spirit of sports with the digital prowess required in today’s world.

Esports in schools is not merely about gaming; it’s a multifaceted programme that fosters teamwork, strategic thinking, and digital literacy.

Here’s how schools can embark on this transformative journey.

The roadmap to creating an Esports dynasty

Identify champions within the school

  • Seek out teachers or staff members passionate about gaming and capable of guiding students not just in gameplay but in developing life skills such as collaboration, problem-solving, and digital competencies.
  • These mentors are pivotal in managing teams, organising meetings, and ensuring a positive, inclusive atmosphere that mirrors the values of sportsmanship and community.

Scout for aspiring gamers

  • Initiate an interest campaign to gather students enthusiastic about forming or joining an Esports team. This step is crucial in building a foundation for the team, focusing on diversity and inclusiveness to tap into the broad spectrum of gaming interests and skills within the student body.

Strategise and equip

  • Develop a comprehensive plan that outlines objectives, assesses available resources, and identifies necessary equipment. Starting with what the school already possesses, gradually work towards acquiring high-performance gaming devices to enhance the team’s competitive edge.
  • Emphasise the importance of powerful CPUs and GPUs, as well as the role of high-speed storage and memory in optimising performance, drawing on insights from industry leaders like Intel and Acer.

Set clear expectations

  • Clearly communicate the goals, structure, and schedules of the Esports program. This involves setting practice times, discussing the balance with academic responsibilities, and fostering an environment of respect and teamwork.
  • Establishing these expectations early on helps in creating a disciplined, focused team that values growth and improvement.

Dive into competition

  • With the team formed and equipped, step into the arena of competition. This involves joining leagues, participating in tournaments, and regularly organising matches to hone skills and strategies.
  • Competing offers invaluable experiences, teaching resilience, adaptability, and the importance of continuous learning and development.
