Twenty-five years ago, a 13-year-old Nikki Webster soared into the hearts of millions as the face of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony. That moment launched a remarkable career in music and remains one of Australia’s most cherished cultural memories.
Last night, Nikki returned to that same Olympic stage — this time hand-in-hand with her two children, daughter Skylah and son Malakai, who are both current students at The McDonald College. Together, they joined the 25th anniversary celebrations of the Sydney Games, creating a full-circle moment that was as moving as it was magical.
For The McDonald College, where Nikki discovered and developed her love of performing, the evening carried a special meaning. The College has nurtured generations of artists, providing a unique blend of academic excellence and world-class performing arts training. Now, Nikki’s children walk those same hallways, rehearsing in the same studios, guided by the same passion for creativity and performance.
Reflecting on her journey, Nikki said: “Without the support of the College, I wouldn’t have been able to have the career that I had.”

At a time when arts funding across Australia is under increasing pressure, it also highlights the need to keep investing in the performing arts. Without dedicated schools, programs, and support, moments like Sydney 2000 — and the generations of performers it has inspired — would not be possible.
For Nikki, that spark ignited in 2000. For her children, and for so many of The McDonald College’s students today, it shines brightly in every rehearsal, every lesson and every time they step on stage.
