The school year is off to a flying start at St Laurence’s College, largely thanks to the range of activities, events and opportunities offered at the College.
Lauries Sports Lunch
The College community were able to unite at the Lauries Sports Lunch, held on 31 May at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.
“We were lucky enough to hear from our amazing guest speakers – Mr David Campese, Ms Gretel Bueta and Mr Aron Baynes, 1996 Old Boy and Dolphins CEO Mr Terry Reader and our MC Mr Mitch Lewis. It was a fantastic event where valuable funds were raised for the Lauries Sports program,” the College said.
“We thank the Lauries Community Committee for their hard work in making the day possible. We also thank all in attendance who contributed to the day and acknowledge the assistance of our generous event and prize sponsors.”
House Choir
The College said its House Choir again proved to be a hit in 2024 with all ten Houses delivering great performances under the theme of ‘Through the Eras’. After much deliberation from the judges, Callan House was crowned the 2024 House Choir champions after their rendition of Adele’s ‘Rolling in the Deep’.
“We must thank our MCs – Gianluca Josey, Harrison Frost and Tayt Qualischefski as well as our amazing judges, AV crew led by Mr Stewart Williams and all those who contributed to the event,” the College said.
Music and the Arts
The Cabaret Concert is one of the highlights on the College musical calendar. On 31 May, the Cabaret Concert, themed ‘A Night at the Movies’ saw amazing performances from Concert Band 1, Percussion Ensemble 1, Big Band 1, String Orchestra 1, Fellowship of the String, Symphony Orchestra, Guitar Orchestra 1, Brotherhood, Big Brotherhood and Treblehood.
The annual LIZID festival also took place at the start of Term 3 with a number of solo and band performances taking place.
“We congratulate all boys who volunteered and offer thanks to our Old Boy band for their performance. A special thanks must go to the Music Department and the AV crew led by Mr Stewart Williams for their tireless work.”
Sport
In the sporting world, AIC sport continues to dominate Saturdays during the school term. During Term 2, the College and the AIC supported causes such as Mental Health Round in partnership with You Are Not Alone and National Reconciliation Week.
The Mental Health Round aimed to start the conversation around youth mental health and to remind students that they are not alone.
“Well done to the Student and College Leadership Team for their work here,” the College said.
For National Reconciliation Week, the College held a Smoking Ceremony led by Uncle Marlon Riley of the Kuku Yalanji Aboriginal peoples of Cape York Peninsula to bless the College’s specially designed jerseys and ties.
“A prominent part of the Smoking Ceremony was the blessing of our new College and House Message Sticks which were handed over by our Yuuningan Yari students to our Heads of House, Dr Liam Herbert and Student Leaders,” the College said.
“This process is a recognition of the College and Houses becoming custodians of these Message Sticks. These Message Sticks will play a key role in House and College gatherings in the future.”
Parent M2L
Organised by the College’s Dean of Middle School, Ms Vanessa Bell, the Parent M2L was an evening where parents of current and incoming Primary and Middle School students engaged in a number of breakout sessions.
“A massive thank you to Mr Lachlan Heshusius, Ms Tiffany Pritchard, Mr Nathan Burridge, Mr Anthony Bird, Ms Emma Serico, Ms Melissa Smith and Mr John Larkin for delivering the presentations. Guests heard about topics such as Academic Buoyancy, The Teenage Brain, Models of Masculinity, Relationships in the digital world, Moving into the Middle School and Tweens and Wellbeing,” the College said.
“We look forward to a strong end of year.”
