The Primary English Teaching Association Australia (PETAA) has launched its inaugural national survey focused on the teaching of reading in primary classrooms across Australia.
The initiative aims to provide a comprehensive look at current pedagogical practices, instructional strategies, and resources utilised by educators across the country in the primary years, shedding light on the realities of teaching reading in diverse learning environments at the most critical time for student development of reading skills.
As a not-for-profit member association dedicated to the advancement of primary English and literacy education for both teachers and students, PETAA believes that teachers are the experts in their field. By engaging directly with educators, it seeks to cut through the noise of media narratives and uncover the authentic experiences, challenges, and triumphs faced in Australian schools.
The survey will delve into crucial areas including pedagogy (what is being taught), instructional routines (how it is being taught), reading models, and the diverse needs of students to build an accurate state of the nation when it comes to the teaching of reading.
“We are excited to embark on this journey to gather insights from teachers across the country,” Associate Professor Helen Adam, PETAA President and researcher in the School of Education at Edith Cowan University said.
“PETAA recognises that understanding how reading is taught in primary Australian classrooms is vital not only for the development of effective teaching practices but also for shaping educational policies that truly reflect the needs of students and educators alike.
“This survey will empower educators to share their voices and experiences, allowing us to build a comprehensive report that illustrates the real story of teaching reading in primary education.”
The resulting report from the national survey will serve as an essential resource for teachers, schools, and policymakers, providing evidence-based recommendations and insights to enhance literacy education across Australia.
PETAA is calling for all primary educators across Australia to participate in the survey and contribute their invaluable perspectives.
“Together, we can shape a brighter future for literacy teaching and learning in Australia – by placing your views and experiences at the forefront,” PETAA CEO Megan Edwards said.
