The Victorian Government has appointed Mr Tony Bates as the new Secretary of the Department of Education.
Mr Bates has been Acting Secretary and brings to the role more than five years’ experience as Deputy Secretary at the Department of Education. He has also held senior roles at Justice and Regulation, Premier and Cabinet, and Victoria Police.

Mr Bates chairs the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) and is a Fellow of the Institute of Public Administration Australia. He also sits on IPAA’s Finance, Risk and Audit Committee.
In 2016, he received the Public Service Medal for outstanding service at Victoria Police.
Mr Bates replaces Ms Jenny Atta, who became Secretary of the Department of Health in February.
Victorian Premier Ms Jacinta Allan congratulated Mr Bates on his appointment.
“We’re making sure that every Victorian child, no matter where they live, can rely on a great public education from early childhood, primary and secondary school to further education.
“Tony will lead the department’s work with expertise and dedication, to make sure Victorian kids get the support, opportunities and education they need to succeed in the Education State.”
