Hundreds of experienced secondary mathematics teachers are being recruited by the Marshall Liberal Government to deliver free online tutoring to students as part of the Learning+ program.
From next year Learning+ will increase the number of tutors to include years 7 and 9 after the pilot was launched for students in years 6 and 8 this year.
The pilot, which is already seeing positive results, is targeted at developing understanding, confidence, and learning outcomes in maths in a one-on-one environment.
Tutoring sessions take place after school or on weekends for 30 minutes twice a week for 10 weeks.
Minister for Education John Gardner said it’s a great opportunity for teachers to earn more income while helping students who need support.
“We’re significantly increasing the number of passionate maths teachers offering online tutoring as part of the Learning+ pilot program,” said Gardner.
“We’ve had an incredible amount of positive feedback from families and tutors involved in the program this year.”
According to Gardner, these experienced maths teachers are committed to understanding individual students’ learning needs to deliver world class learning opportunities online.
“Mathematics is a critical skill for students to develop and schools are seeing many students improve their understanding in the subject because of this innovative online program,” he said.
Schools can nominate to take part in the program and students will be selected to participate.
“We know many jobs of the future require a STEM focus and this is why we want to increase engagement and improve outcomes for young learners in maths,” said Gardner.
“The Learning+ pilot is also a rewarding experience for tutors who benefit greatly through access to free professional learning opportunities from leading educators and are paid for tutoring sessions and planning.”
All maths teachers including public, private, temporary relief teachers (TRTs) and teachers on maternity leave can apply to become to a Learning+ tutor.
Applications for tutoring in term 1 2022 are now open online via the Learning+ tutor application portal.
