What if the thing that makes students love sport – the movement, the competition, the stakes – could make them love STEM too?
That is the idea behind GOAL!, a free program developed by The Huddle, the community arm of North Melbourne Football Club, in collaboration with the Mathematical Association of Victoria.
Designed as a suite of downloadable lesson plans, GOAL! brings the energy of Australian Rules Football into the classroom to transform how students engage with Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
Designed to align with the Victorian and Australian Curriculum, as well as the NSW Syllabus, GOAL! uses sport as the entry point to learning. By connecting classroom concepts to real-world, high-energy activities, the program is helping students see STEM not just as subjects, but as skills they can experience, apply and enjoy.
At the heart of GOAL! is a simple idea: students learn best when they’re engaged. Through a series of interactive, sports-themed lessons, students explore everything from angles and force to data and design thinking, all while moving, collaborating and problem-solving.
One standout lesson in the Kangaroos series, Goal Accuracy, puts this into practise. Students simulate shots from nine different angles, collecting and recording data to identify the best positions to score from. Working in pairs, they analyse why certain spots are easier than others, factoring in angle, distance and even the wind, building skills in angles, fractions and data analysis through the lens of elite-level Australian Rules Football.
The impact of this approach is immediate and powerful.
