Teachers across Victoria are gaining access to a suite of free, curriculum-aligned STEM resources designed to boost engagement and simplify lesson planning, thanks to the GOAL! program from The Huddle, the community arm of the North Melbourne Kangaroos.
Designed as a “plug and play” solution for Years 5 and 6, GOAL! combines sport and STEM to deliver hands-on, real-world learning experiences that align with the Victorian Curriculum. The program includes ready-to-use lesson plans, complete with learning intentions, success criteria and curriculum links – features teachers say are critical in time-poor classrooms.
Ms Simone Hickman, a teacher at Ascot Vale West Primary School, has seen firsthand how the approach can shift student attitudes towards maths.
“What I found that was really awesome to see was the engagement of the students, which was very hands-on,” she said. “Being in Melbourne, a city full of sport, tying that into anything in the classroom is really helpful because it improves engagement.”
The program opens with video content featuring professional athletes, helping to hook students with storytelling before transitioning into classroom activities. Ms Hickman says this approach is particularly effective in overcoming maths disengagement.
“Kids often think, ‘I’m not good at maths’ – that’s a statement we hear quite regularly,” she said. “So tying it in with real-life things and making it a problem they have to solve really helps. Real-life application is a big one to hook students in.”
GOAL! lessons centre on practical, collaborative challenges – such as designing and building kicking machines – while exploring key STEM concepts like measurement, statistics and problem-solving. According to educators who have piloted the program, students become more curious, confident and collaborative when learning feels relevant and connected to their interests.
Another teacher involved in the pilot, Makyila, a Grade 4 teacher from The Grange, used the program to link classroom learning with teamwork and sport-based problem-solving. Her students explored data and engineering concepts through hands-on activities, reinforcing core maths and science skills in an applied context.
For teachers, the appeal lies not just in engagement, but in usability.
“As teachers, we’re obviously time poor,” Ms Hickman said. “Anything that has curriculum links is huge – we can just grab it, put it straight into our planner. If learning intentions and success criteria are already there, that’s exactly what we’re looking for.”
The GOAL! website provides a bank of structured lessons that are free to access and easy to implement, supporting differentiated learning while maintaining strong curriculum alignment. The program is also designed to be inclusive, using sport as a universal language to connect with a broad range of students.
With increasing focus on improving STEM outcomes and addressing student disengagement, particularly in mathematics, initiatives like GOAL! highlight the potential of contextualised learning.
By combining the appeal of sport with practical STEM challenges, the program offers a model for how schools can make abstract concepts more tangible – and more meaningful – for students.
As Ms Hickman puts it: “Making it exciting, giving it a story, and turning it into a real-life problem –that’s what gets students involved.”
