Peta Jeppesen, founder of Beyond the Classroom Australia, helps schools move from frustrated to functional – and today, she shares the simple journey she uses to get there.
Across schools, I see similar frustrations: most days are set by the loudest crisis, not by shared priorities. Professional development often feels like a checkbox exercise – one-off workshops that don’t stick. Leaders end up carrying the weight of culture and wellbeing alone, which isn’t sustainable. And while high empathy is a strength, without tools it can quickly turn into compassion fatigue.
But here’s the good news: these are patterns, not people problems. With simple, shared habits, schools can shift from frustration to flow.
The first step is learning to fit your own mask first. As leaders, our nervous systems set the tone. Steady adults de-escalate hard moments. Rest isn’t a reward or an add-on – it’s the foundation of lasting change. It’s about practical, micro habits that return you to baseline throughout the day. Even one slow out-breath before speaking can reduce reactivity and change the next five minutes.
People often ask, “But where do I find the time?” The answer: this saves time. Fewer flare-ups mean cleaner conversations and faster recoveries. When rest becomes part of the rhythm, we open space for Play → Create → Innovate. That’s how we move from surviving the day to leading with clarity and calm.
Our journey unfolds in four simple stages:
Rest – moving from reactive days to regulated starts, where a shared language lowers the heat in the moment.
Play – shifting from tense conversations to presence and voice, so people re-enter hard moments steadier.
Create – turning ideas into small, safe-to-try experiments that staff own and grow together.
Innovate – transforming from hero leadership to shared ownership, scaling what works and making it stick.
That’s the path from frustrated to functional across an entire school.
To help you begin, I’ve created a Rockstar Toolkit – practical strategies drawn from our Rest, Play, Create, and Innovate framework. It’s human-first and evidence-informed, built into your existing routines so it doesn’t add to the load. Schools in our programs report steadier staff, fewer reactive moments, and faster recovery after challenges.
We offer support at two levels: a 12-month school-wide program and one-on-one coaching for teachers. You can download your next free toolkit strategy on ‘Play’ and book a quick chat to explore what this could look like in your context.
If this resonates, scan the QR code to connect – I’d love to hear about your school and share a sample plan. Whether you’re a classroom teacher or a principal leading a team, we tailor our approach to where you are right now.
Let’s reimagine what’s possible in education – where rest is respected, play is encouraged, and every person feels safe enough to create and innovate.
