The Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) has released new nationally endorsed Australian Professional Standards for Middle Leaders.
With more than 94,000 middle leaders across the country they play a crucial role in leading teaching and learning, supporting staff, and driving school improvement.
“Middle leaders are the engine room of our schools – they connect strategy with classroom practice and are essential to the success of all learners,” AITSL CEO Mr Tim Bullard said.
“These new standards recognise the important expertise of middle leaders and can be used to further support their growth and development, helping them to progress further in their career.”
With a diverse range of middle leader roles across Australia, the Middle Leader Standards recognise the complexity of this role and provides practical guidance for professional growth at every career stage.
Positioned between the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers and the Australian Professional Standard for Principals, the Middle Leader Standards create a clear and practical pathway for leadership development.
“These Standards can be used by current middle leaders to develop their capabilities, or guide those aspiring to become a principal. They can also be used to highlight career pathways for teachers aspiring to become a middle leader,” Mr Bullard said.
Developed in partnership with the Queensland Department of Education and in consultation with the profession, the Standards reflect what effective leadership looks like in action. While not mandatory, they can be used to guide reflection, goal setting, feedback, and professional learning – strengthening leadership capability and helping leaders strengthen their practice without imposing new responsibilities.
The use of the Middle Leader Standards is voluntary, and early response from the profession has been highly positive, with many schools already adopting the framework to support leadership development.
“This national adoption is a huge milestone for AITSL and for the profession. The adoption of the Middle Leader Standards by all education ministers demonstrates strong support for the profession and ensures every child and young person benefits from effective leadership at every level,” Mr Bullard said.
