Mr Scott Donohoe joined St Joseph’s College Hunters Hill as Deputy Headmaster in January 2025. He shares what makes the school different.
WhichSchool?: What are the top three highlights you’ve experienced as a teacher at the school?
Mr Donohoe: The spirit of our students and the passionate way in which they support one other; the rousing singing at College Masses which all our boys participate in; and the genuine partnership the College and its staff develop with families.
WS: What makes the school different from other schools?
Mr Donohoe: Joeys is truly a unique school that stands on the shoulders of its Marist Brothers founders in 1881. A key point of difference is the culture. As a large boarding school with an extended day program, the boys spend much of their time at school together which fosters the development of strong relationships.
WS: Why is the school a great place to teach?
Mr Donohoe: There is an incredible sense of community. Students arrive at the College gates from local, interstate, rural and international places. They have a strong affection for the school, supported by dedicated families and staff, which creates a quality and inclusive learning environment.
WS: What are some of the challenges faced by teachers in the primary/secondary sector?
Mr Donohoe: The complexities of the digital world, including social media, present numerous challenges for both adolescents and teachers, particularly in a secondary context.
WS: Tell us about your approach or philosophy to teaching?
Mr Donohoe: Relationships are central to a successful education. High expectations should be set for young people in an environment where relationships are built on genuine care and support.
WS: Did you have a teacher that inspired you? Tell us about them, and how they inspired you.
Mr Donohoe: As a former student and full boarder at the College, it wasn’t just one teacher who inspired me. The presence, care and support of many staff, especially the Marist Brothers, profoundly influenced me and shaped my values.
