Sports Day Sydney Japanese School

The Sydney Japanese International School (SJIS) is a diverse and multicultural educational institution that celebrates cultural exchange and promotes inclusivity.

One of the most exciting events that the school hosts is the Sports Day, known as “undokai” in Japanese. This event brings together students, teachers, and parents to participate in a day of fun, friendly competition, and cultural celebration.

The Sports Day at the Sydney Japanese International School is a highly anticipated event that takes place every year in May.

CELEBRATING SPORTS DAY

The day starts with an opening ceremony, where students and teachers gather to sing the Japanese and Australian national anthems and a pledge by the students to try their best. This is followed by a series of events that include track and field races, team games, and other physical activities.

A FOCUS ON TEAMWORK

One of the unique aspects of Sports Day is that it emphasizes teamwork and cooperation over individual achievement. The students and staff are divided into red and white teams and they compete against each other in a variety of games and events, such as the tug of war, relay races, and obstacle courses. The students work together to earn points for their teams, cheering each other on and celebrating their successes.

EXPLORING JAPANESE CULTURE

Apart from the sporting events, the Sports Day also features cultural performances that showcase the rich heritage of Japan. Students perform Soran-bushi which is a fisherman’s folk dance which depict the rough seas, dragging nets and pulling ropes. It is a spectacular show performed in traditional Japanese happi coats and powerful taiko drum beats.

UNITY AND INCLUSIVITY

The Sports Day at the Sydney Japanese International School is a fun-filled event that promotes physical fitness, teamwork, and cultural exchange. It is a celebration of Japanese and Australian culture that brings together the entire school community, fostering a sense of unity and inclusivity.

SJIS Sports Day is a tradition that continues to thrive and inspire students to be their best selves, both on and off the field.
