The ACT Government has launched a recruitment campaign to attract new teachers into the public school system in the nation’s capital.
The Teach in Canberra campaign aims to attract teachers from Greater Western Sydney, regional NSW, regional Victoria, regional Queensland and New Zealand to apply for teaching roles in the ACT.
Minister for Education and Youth Affairs Ms Yvette Berry said every ACT public school student deserves a great education, and great teachers have a lasting influence on the lives of children and young people.
“There is no greater vocation than being a teacher and shaping the lives of future generations,” Ms Berry said.
“Teachers play a critical role in cultivating our children’s future and have a lasting impact on students, families and the wider community. The ACT Government is working hard to recruit teachers to join our growing public school system now and for the 2025 school year.
“We want teachers across Australia and New Zealand to know that ACT public schools are leaders in public sector education. We offer competitive pay and conditions that support teacher wellbeing with new educator salaries starting from $86,253, provide up to $12,000 in relocation expenses, and have a new three-year educator support program to help graduate teachers thrive. Our Enterprise Agreement for teachers is among the best in the nation.
“We all know Canberra is a great place to live, work and raise a family. The Teach in Canberra campaign will help us spread the word to teachers about the opportunities that ACT public schools can offer.”
The Education Directorate is working closely with schools and universities in Canberra and regional New South Wales to encourage students into teacher career pathways at expos and career days.
The ACT also continues to have strong relationships with the university sector by enabling students to take part in the Permit to Teach program in our public schools.
Students in the final part of their degree from the University of Canberra, Australian Catholic University, Charles Sturt University (CSU) campuses in NSW, as well as Swinburne University can receive paid placement in an ACT public school while gaining invaluable classroom experience.
“We know we need to hire more teachers to meet the needs of our growing city, and we are committed to ensuring that we address the challenges of the national teacher shortage to keep delivering a high-quality public education system across our city,” Ms Berry said.
