The Brisbane Catholic Education annual Esports Gala Day was held on 19 June with Southern Cross Catholic College – Official Scarborough’s Team 2 of five students taking out the top spot, with St Columban’s College Caboolture team the runners up.
They competed in Minecraft games against 130 fellow students from 16 Brisbane Catholic Education schools in 26 teams for the title of Esports champions.
The Gala Days, held on 19 June at Southern Cross Catholic College for northern schools and on 21 June at Beenleigh’s Trinity College for southern schools, highlights the positive aspects of technology and gaming, fostering teamwork, collaboration, and strategic thinking similar to traditional sports.
“With the results of this highly competitive one-day event, it’s clear screen time can be very productive for students across Brisbane Catholic Education,” a spokesperson said.
Originally established to maintain connection and engagement among students during the COVID-19 pandemic, the event focused on physical representations of learning, and over the years has evolved into a technology-driven experience with an emphasis on game design using Minecraft.
Brisbane Catholic Education organisers said the events empower students to explore their interests, develop new skills, and connect with peers who share their passion for technology and gaming.
