Barker College has once again solidified its reputation as a powerhouse in robotics, with its talented students representing both the school and Australia at two of the most prestigious global competitions – the FIRST and VEX Robotics World Championships in the United States.
Throughout April and May, students demonstrated teamwork, engineering excellence, and strategic prowess, earning well-deserved accolades on the international stage.
Making History at FIRST World Championship
A group of 35 Barker students from Years 10 to 12 travelled to Houston, Texas, to compete in the FIRST World Championship, facing off against some of the best robotics teams worldwide. The competition, renowned for its intense problem-solving, innovation, and collaboration, saw Barker’s teams rise to the occasion with groundbreaking performances.
The Barker Redbacks made history by winning their division, outperforming over 70 international teams. Their achievement was further highlighted by their Industrial Design Award, a prestigious recognition celebrating outstanding form, function, and aesthetics in robot engineering.
One of the students, Jiaqi, reflected on the experience, describing it as “a thrilling four days of innovation and teamwork.” Advancing to the Einstein Division—the pinnacle of the competition—the Redbacks powered through to the semifinals, ultimately securing an astonishing third-place global ranking out of 700 teams.
Beyond this triumph, both the FRC Barker Greybacks and FTC Barker Redbacks upheld Australia’s robotics prowess. Though facing stiff international competition, their presence at the World Championship was a testament to their strategic thinking and technical skill.
Ajay, a member of the FTC Drive team, expressed the immense learning experience gained from competing at such a high level, noting, “Driving in this high-pressure environment was more than controlling a robot—it sharpened my focus and resilience, qualities I know will be valuable beyond competition.”
VEX Robotics World Championship – Dallas, Texas
The success continued in Dallas, Texas, where Barker’s younger students—Years 7 to 9—stepped onto the world stage at the VEX Robotics World Championship. Competing in both the IQ and VRC categories, they showcased strategic thinking and technical excellence.
In a division filled with elite teams, Barker’s Year 8 competitors placed 4th overall—an incredible milestone for the team. Johan, one of the participants, reflected on the significance of teamwork and perseverance in the competition, calling it a “once-in-a-lifetime experience.”
Meanwhile, Year 7 teams embraced the challenge, using their participation as a valuable learning experience to refine skills and prepare for future success. Their efforts proved promising, with Lachlan highlighting the global connections formed, stating, “Playing and strategising with people from outside my country has given me experiences I will never forget.”
In the VRC division, Barker’s students became alliance captains in the finals—an extraordinary accomplishment demonstrating leadership, strategy, and resilience.
