Australian Education Research Organisation (AERO) has released two suites of resources designed to help schools enhance student outcomes through evidence-based teaching practices and a deliberate and structured implementation approach.

The free resources includes guides and videos of practice to support the elements of AERO’s Model of Learning and Teaching, along with implementation resources that provide school leaders with guidance on how to effectively adopt evidence-based teaching practices in a deliberate and structured way.

Dr Jenny Donovan, CEO of AERO, emphasised the importance of both evidence-based teaching practices and their effective implementation.

“We know that evidence-based teaching practices have a significant impact on improving student outcomes. However, to get the most student benefit out of the practices, schools need a deliberate and structured approach to implementation.”

“These new resources provide another expansion to AERO’s free resource toolkit for schools. The video resources show real teachers using evidence-based practices in diverse Australian classroom settings, while new practice guides on planning, cultural safety and family engagement add to our guidance on effective instruction,” Dr Donovan said.

The evidence-based teaching resources are built on AERO’s Model of Learning and Teaching, providing comprehensive guidance across the areas of instruction, gradual release, planning and enabling. The expanded suite also includes seven practice-focused videos and four lesson videos demonstrating how these practices work together to maximise learning.

The implementation resources, developed and tested through AERO’s Learning Partner Project, are designed to help schools transition from understanding best practices to consistently and effectively implementing them across their school.

“We have drawn on key ideas from implementation research to develop an approach that can help schools to transform good ideas and enthusiasm into tangible improved outcomes for students,” Dr Donovan added.

The implementation resources include a professional learning module, materials for developing a school implementation plan, and guidance on how to address implementation enablers and barriers. These build on resources released in August 2024.

All resources are now available for free on AERO’s website:

  • Teaching for how students learn: Practice guides
  • Teaching for how students learn: Videos of practice
  • Implementation resources: Where to start
