Deputy Head of Secondary (Years 7-9) Ms Skye Wallden explains how the transition from primary to secondary school at The Lakes College is more than a process.

Nestled in North Lakes, Brisbane, The Lakes College (TLC) is a P-12 school that prioritises connection and belonging for students, families and teachers.

A key focus at TLC is ensuring a smooth transition for Year 6 students entering Junior Secondary, recognising the academic, social and emotional challenges they may face. Through the Thriving Through Transition Program, we create a structured journey which begins a year before students start Year 7.

Thriving Through Transition Program
Transitioning from primary to secondary school is a significant step, often marked by cognitive and emotional changes (Arnold, 2000). Research shows that students experience the least academic progress during this shift (ACER, 2012). To address this, TLC implements a multi-stage transition program:

  • Term 1, Year Prior: A parent and carer session introduces families to key staff and support structures, easing anxieties and fostering understanding.
  • Term 2, Year Prior: Parents and students experience ‘A Day in the Life of a Year 7 Student at TLC’, led by current Year 7 students. A panel discussion, campus tour and video overview provide insight into daily life, with each student receiving a personalised House keepsake to build a sense of belonging.
  • Term 3: The ‘Experience Year 7 Day’ allows students to engage with familiar Year 7 guides, reducing apprehension about interacting with older students.
  • Term 1, Year 7: A follow-up transition evening after five weeks in school includes discussions on student progress, camp reflections and strategies for continued support. This event strengthens partnerships between TLC and families to ensure student success.

Connection: Building a Strong Foundation
Establishing personal and school connections is crucial for Year 7 students. Through an interdisciplinary approach in English, Health & Physical Education and Faith and Values Education (FAVE), students explore ‘My Story, Your Story, Our Story’. They create identity narratives, engage with TLC’s values and understand the physical changes they are experiencing. This initiative helps students feel connected to one another and to the school.

Belonging: The Role of Year 7 Camp
Year 7 Camp in Week 2 is a pivotal moment in the transition process. Students step outside their comfort zones, form friendships and develop resilience. Year 12 leaders participate to support and mentor the younger students, easing their concerns about interacting with older peers. The camp fosters unity, ensuring students return to school as a cohesive group ready for the challenges of Junior Secondary.

Creating a Supportive Learning Environment
At TLC, structured and predictable classroom environments help students feel secure. Clear expectations and routines ensure that students can seek help, collaborate effectively and perform at their best. This learning culture is essential for a successful transition and long-term academic success.

Belonging. Believing. Becoming.
At The Lakes College, transition is more than a process – it is a commitment to ensuring every student feels a sense of belonging. Our carefully designed program provides a strong foundation for Year 7 students, preparing them for a thriving Junior Secondary experience. Welcome to TLC – we look forward to walking this journey with you.
